Staghound the 2002 R/P 50 from San Diego had a great year in 2019 and winning the overall at Long Point Race Week was a bonus.  Long Point Race Week hosted by Balboa and Newport Harbor Yacht Club’s is the premier big boat event in Southern California.  It has a history of being great sailing followed by fun onshore events on beautiful Catalina Island.

The race is over 3 days, racing to Catalina from Newport Beach on the first day, racing along Catalina the second day, racing back to Newport Beach on the last day.  This gives a windward race, a windward-leeward race, and a downwind race.

Staghound won their class on the first day and placed second overall.  On the second day, the windward-leeward race Staghound stayed to the right of the fleet and covered the right sailing in more wind as most of the fleet stayed to the left to sail in less current.  Staying in the more pressure paid huge dividends.  Staghound rounded the top mark just as the wind increased another 3 knots allowing them to stay in the FiberPath Plus heavy #1 until the run.

On the last day, the race started in a medium breeze and increased as the fleet transitioned the channel toward Newport Beach.  The big boats start last and picking lanes became a strategic part of this last race.  As the breeze increased the bigger boats and planing boats started to pull away.  Staghound having a great start and always consistent speed stayed up in the front of the fleet finishing 2nd in class and 6th overall to take the overall win at Long Point Race Week by 4 points.
